Dental extraction
Tooth Avulsion in Geneva
When no treatment can save a tooth, or for orthodontic reasons, we sometimes need to extract it. Today, specific techniques and precautions limit post-operative pain and swelling.
Why might a tooth extraction be necessary?
We perform tooth extractions for various reasons:
- Advanced tooth decay: When decay severely damages a tooth and no treatment such as bonding or a prosthesis can restore it.
- Dental infections: If a bacterial infection reaches the dental pulp (nerve) and root canal treatment fails.
- Orthodontic preparation: To facilitate the movement of other teeth as part of orthodontic treatment.
- Fracture or crack: When a fracture is too low under the bone or gum, preventing the placement of a prosthesis.
How is a tooth extraction performed?
Evaluation: Before extraction, we conduct a comprehensive evaluation, including X-rays to assess the position and condition of the tooth.
Anesthesia: We apply local anesthesia to numb the area and minimize discomfort during the procedure.
Extraction: We use special instruments to loosen the tooth from its socket (dental cavity) and remove it gently. Sometimes, we section the tooth into several pieces to facilitate removal.
Suturing and recovery: After extraction, we may place stitches to close the wound. You will receive instructions on post-operative care and pain management for a quick and comfortable recovery.
Advantages of tooth extraction
- Prevention of complications: Extracting a damaged or infected tooth prevents future complications and protects oral health.
- Pain relief: By eliminating a source of pain, we quickly improve the patient’s comfort.
- Preservation of oral health: Extracting a problematic tooth can preserve the health of other teeth and oral tissues.
